There's a sense of forward motion and muscularity to the M35, even at a standstill. Without resorting to extreme styling cues, Infiniti has created a unique sedan that makes its own statement on the road. The M35's profile looks low, with a waistline that rises over its haunches. A short front overhang adds to the impression that the car is leaning forward, like a cheetah ready to pounce. The M35 eschews excessive ornamentation or body scalloping, opting instead for clean lines and moderate fenders that flare over beautiful 19-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels wearing low profile tires.

Big HID xenon headlamps wrap the front corners with a predator's gaze, and the bulging horizontal grill implies power under the hood. The rear end of the M35 comes to a neat right angled stop, maximizing trunk space and giving a trim, clean view to those who fall behind. A flash of the LED taillights lets the vanquished know that they've been overtaken by a high-tech car.

I had occasion to valet park the M35 a few times during my testing. Each time, the valets chose to park it in a prominent spot – high praise in LA's hierarchy of valet parking. My usual ride winds up in Siberia – that is, if I can convince the valets to take the keys in the first place.Just opening the door of the M35 gives you an idea about the car's quality. The well-balanced doors have the right weight and solidity, and resound with a solid thunk when you pull them closed. Infiniti's great seats are covered with leather that will just improve with age and use. My girlfriend loved the climate control feature, which air conditions or heats the seats at your command. The 10-way power adjustment combined with tilt/telescope adjustment for the leather-wrapped steering wheel make finding the right driving position a breeze, and memory settings make the car smart enough to return you to that position. The M35 also features keyless ignition – you start and stop the engine by pushing a button on the dash while depressing the brake pedal. Very cool.

I've always liked Infiniti's Controller technology – a computer command center with a dash-mounted 7-inch LCD monitor that can display everything from audio settings to tire pressure. My test vehicle was outfitted with the $4,200 "Technology Package" of options, which includes DVD navigation and a surround sound system, both of which operate intuitively through the Controller. The longer you owned this car, the more features you'd be able to take advantage of and masteThe M35 moves like a shark, with smooth precision and relentless forward momentum. Front engine/rear drive is a great setup, and the 280 hp/270 lb-ft of torque from the M35's 3.5 Liter 24-valve V6 is plenty to motivate the 3,880 lb vehicle. I didn't feel the need to use the manual shift mode very often, as the 5-speed automatic transmission kept the M35's engine in the powerband under most conditions. I always had confidence in high demand situations like passing and merging onto the freeway, and twisty roads were positively a romp with Infiniti's Rear Active Steer. The M35's vehicle speed-sensitive steering felt direct and communicated road conditions without harshness. The Lane Departure Warning system beeps when you stray from your lane – a much more polite system than my girlfriend's usual shrieks of terror.

My only slight annoyance with the M35 had to do with the controls on the steering wheel. During hard cornering, I caught a toggle on the wheel more than once, changing the radio station or climate control settings by accident.2011 will see the introduction of the redesigned Infiniti M-series. The V6 version will be known as the M37, which I assume means it'll get the 330ish horsepower V6 from the G37. The V8 will be the M56. Yowza! In Infiniti parlance, that means 5.6 liters and, according to Infiniti, something like 400 horsepower.

This is the new version of the Hyundai Sonata as packaged for Hyundai's home market of Korea. The US-spec version of the car, due in 2010 as a 2011 model, will look similar.
Here's the skinny if you only have a minute to read this review: Get the Sonata with the 4-cylinder engine, manual transmission and save the rest of your money for a rainy day. For less than $18k you'll get Honda-quality engineering, a long warranty and a car as reliable as a Lexus or Infiniti. As tested: $17,895. Warranty (not bumper-to-bumper): 10 years/100,000 milesIt's clear that Hyundai's engineers were benchmarking the Honda Accord as the vehicle to build. And boy did they hit the nail on the head. In fact, they may have cheated a little because the trunk and the rear taillights appear to be a knock-off from the current Accord. Head on, even the new Hyundai grill-mounted logo could be mistaken for Honda's. While it may not sound like it, I'm complimenting Hyundai - the Accord is a hell of a car.

That said the '06 Sonata has a refreshingly clean, very contemporary look from every angle. The concave hood dome, the jewelled projector headlights and fog lights for example, are both original touches. In a very subtle way, the Sonata's a very attractive automobile. And it's actually quite a bit bigger car than you're probably thinking.

Measured strictly by its exterior dimensions the new Sonata qualifies as a "mid-size." Remarkably, however, the EPA actually classifies it as a "large" car because of its interior volume - 120 cubic feet. Sonata's main rivals are all classified as mid-size.Talk about improvement! Headroom, elbowroom and legroom in all five seats are exceptional. Yes indeed, five adults can actually fit comfortably in this one. The seat cushions are set higher off the floor making not only for exceptionally easy entry and exit but also for excellent visibility from every seat.

It has an enormous trunk with a conveniently low liftover. The trunk lid lifts up and well out of the way and the 60/40 split rear seats fold flat making for an immense cargo area.

The dash features an economical and convenient design with metal-like trim on the center console. With their dark background, the gauges can be a bit hard to read in some conditions, however.

Wind and road noise are kept luxury-car low thanks to body refinements made in the wind tunnel. Tight fitting glass did a fine job even keeping out most of the blat from a Harley with Screaming Eagle pipes that paced us for a couple of blocks.

Even with the basic 4-cylinder GL you get all the latest safety enhancements, including 4 disc brakes with ABS and EBD as well as electronic stability control and traction control. Six air bags with active front seat head restraints (prevents whiplash) are also standard.
On the Road
Two new DOHC engines are offered in the 2006 Sonata - an inline 2.4L four-cylinder (I-4) developing 162hp (164 lb-ft torque) and a 3.3L V-6 developing 235 hp (226 lb-ft torque).

I've tested both V-6 and I-4 equipped vehicles and frankly, I prefer the 4-cylinder. I don't know the type of driving you do but my short hops in city-type of stop-and-go conditions proved better suited to the I-4. Like it or not, fuel economy is a social, perhaps even a security issue these days. In real life driving, the fewer cylinders you have to feed with fuel, the less fuel you'll use. The I-4 promises to be far more fuel-efficient than the V-6.

I was particularly impressed with the I-4's highway manners. It's smooth, quiet and quite responsive. Because the I-4 engine is lighter than V-6, its front suspension has been tuned a bit softer. My more competitive driving colleagues claim this induces more understeer. Nevertheless, with its much-improved body stiffness (compared with the '05) and a state-of-the-art double wishbone front and 5-link rear suspension, the '06 Sonata felt exceptionally secure on all the roads I took it, even the tight and twisty mountain roads.I've driven all variations of the Sonatas (engines and transmissions) and all were quite good but I'd probably opt for the 5-speed manual, were I in the market for a new car.

The 2005 Hyundai Sonata was designed in California and engineered in Michigan. While V-6 models are built in Alabama, the 4-cylinder car is built in South Korea. Build quality is identical, though - according to a technical expert I consulted. In fact, he compared the Sonata's quality to German cars costing three times more!

The new Sonata's contemporary styling, reasonable prices, long list of standard features and demonstrated bulletproof reliability represents strongest challenge yet to the Japanese. It's an ideal-sized, exceptionally well-engineered, contemporary sedan that’s made for folks who want reliable, comfortable and stylish transportation with a minimum of waste. And all of it at a reasonable price. Hyundai's come a long way and its really ready to take you for a ride. And this ride you can afford.

CDC or Classic Design Concepts is a tuner in Novi, Michigan, USA. They took a Dodge Challenger SRT-8 and added a supercharger which pushes 560 HP! They also installed an adjustable suspension system from PW, exhaust from Pypes Performance and a big brake upgrade by Baer.

RDP Motorsport in Ohio have added their own flavor of modifications to the Dodge Challenger SRT-8 and came up with a Twin Supercharged 440 Stroker which they introduced at the Performance Racing Industry (PRI) Show in Florida. They have added a plethora of modifications, however the majority of it’s 1000hp is thanks to a one of a kind Twin Bullet / RDP Harrop Supercharger system and a nitrous boosting system from Nitrous Express.

2010 BMW 5-Series GT Car

Depending on whether you like the way it looks, BMW's new segment-buster is either a stroke of genius or proof that the company's design department has suffered a collective stroke. The Gran Turismo will hit the market later this year as a 2010 model, likely with twin-turbocharged powerplants-an in-line six for the 535i GT, a V-8 for the 550i GT. The GT is based on the next-generation, F10-chassis 5-series, and it's about as wide and as long as a short-wheelbase 7-series. Sliding rear seats offer the choice between 7-series legroom for two rear passengers or extra luggage space, and a novel hatch allows the cargo area to be accessed like either a hatched wagon or a conventional trunked sedan.

Despite its controversial styling, we think the GT will have tremendous presence on the road thanks to its imposing proportions. And BMW might be on to something-as the world moves away from the eco-guilt of boxy SUVs, this tall sedan/coupe/hatchback might be the body style of the future.

BMW X6 Active Hybrid

A hybrid X6 will go on sale later this year, and unlike BMW's other European-market hybrid systems, this is a full-on, two-mode hybrid that uses technology jointly developed with General Motors, Chrysler, and Mercedes-Benz. BMW promises, however, that the X6 will remain a driver's car despite the practically incomprehensible powertrain dance that a dual-mode system does.

2011 BMW 5-series An all-new 5-series is scheduled to arrive for the 2011 model year with a selection of turbocharged engines and loads of technology features from the 7-series-including BMW's new and vastly improved iDrive. A wagon should debut shortly after the sedan.

2012 BMW 6-series An all-new 6-series luxocoupe, again based on the 5-series, is due for 2012 in both hardtop and convertible form. The ragtop will retain its fabric roof-but not, we hope, the current 6's frumpy styling.

2010 BMW 7-series The 7-series was brand-new for 2009, but it gets a number of fresh additions for '10. A first-ever all-wheel-drive version of BMW's largest sedan arrives this fall. Shortly after comes a mild hybrid, which will use auto start/stop and other technologies to reduce its thirst for fuel. A V-12-powered 7-series is also on the way. Expect it to feature twin turbos and produce monumental power.

For those who hanker for an off-road crossover but don't want a Q5, Audi offers this: the 2010 A4 Allroad Quattro.

You'll likely remember that `Allroad' nameplate from the original 1999 A6 Allroad Quattro, which mixed a number of off-road parts into an otherwise normal A6 wagon. The A4 Allroad is a similar concoction - it's been raised by 37 mm and widened by 20 mm to increase off-road clearance, while new rocker panels and bumper guards help protect the A4 Allroad from debris.

Three engines will initially be offered with two transmissions. The six-speed manual will be available only with the a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel "TDI" I-4. The new seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch transmission will be available with the both the 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 and a larger 3.0-liter diesel V-6. The 2.0 TDI puts out 168 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and the 2.0 TFSI puts out similar torque figures and 208 hp. Opting for the top-of-the-line 3.0 TDI yields 237 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

Helping the Allroad gain traction off the road is the latest Quattro all-wheel-drive system, which features a standard 40/60 percent front/rear torque split. The revised Quattro system can send up to 85 percent of its power rearward and up to 65 percent to the front wheels. Traction is constantly monitored by the stability program, which includes special "Offroad Detection" technology to monitor surface consistency and adjust the ESP accordingly.

Although it seems the A4 Allroad Quattro is well suited to travel most places, it won't reach North America - after all, that's a prime market for the all-new Q5...

Unlike its forebear, the EL. The Canadian-only Acura CSX never sold well, even Honda Canada has agreed it isn’t as a marketing succeed as all the EL preceding it.

Dynamically speaking, CSX is a very delightful car to drive. Our tester is the mid-level Tech package with manual gearbox. Honda has always been known for building excellent front-driver, which is balanced and agile. Steering is sharp with great feedback. CSX has lived up to its tradition as a very fun-to-drive sports sedan. Its Type-S version would certainly run like a wind. With 155hp and 139 lb/ft of torque pumped out from a 2.0 liter i-VTEC motor, there is plenty of power with both 5-speed manual or manumatic transmissions.

When it comes to use of materials and fit-and-finish, CSX is a notch above Civic which its loosely based on. There are plenty of classy plastic materials with tactical feedback on all switchgears. It also feels spacious inside with comfortable leather seats abound.

The biggest problem with CSX is its priced too close to the Accord. There isn’t any market as price-conscious as Canadian market, regardless of how small it is. But consumers are simply flocking to lesser Civic with 1.8 liter or to larger Accord instead of going to Acura showroom. In terms of execution, Acura has done a wonderful job with the CSX. All the conceptable areas are so much better than all the ELs have gone before. But its the market positioning that has killed this nice little luxury car.

One could argue that what Acura needs is a really good-looking sedan rather than a really good-looking crossover, but a four-door crossover coupe is what Honda's luxury division has cooked up. It's the first Acura to have been conceived and executed entirely within the confines of the new Acura studio in Torrance, California, which was split off from the Honda studios in California a few years ago in an effort to imbue future Acuras with their own identity. Judging from the ZDX, this was a worthwhile move on the part of American Honda, because the newest Acura, all sinewy and modern, looks terrific. It also represents by far the most successful use of Acura's double-pentagon grille, although one wonders if Acura will ever have a facial identity that is at once attractive and readily identifiable.

In any case, the ZDX prototype that debuted at the New York auto show is nearly identical to the MDX-based production vehicle that will go on sale this October. Exterior designer Michelle Christensen was inspired by the tension and shape in a slingshot that's about to be fired, and she translated this notion into the shape of the roof structure. Seen from above, the roof rails are wide in front, where they form the A-pillars, and are drawn tightly inward as they are pulled taut at the rear of the vehicle. The ZDX's haunches themselves invoke the flanks of a wide-body Porsche 911, which is not bad company to keep. A full-length, panoramic glass roof will be standard.

"The ZDX is a four-door luxury sports coupe," explains the project leader on the exterior design, Damon Schell. "But it is a celebration of the front passengers. We tried very hard to hide the fact that the rear door is even there, hiding the door handles in the C-pillars." Yet since the ZDX is roughly the size of an Infiniti FX, there's room for three passengers in the rear seats or, when the seats are folded down, a decent amount of cargo. Up front, the ultramodern instrument panel is bisected by a cleaned-up version of Acura's T-shaped center stack and is copiously accented in pearlescent white leather. The MDX's 3.5-liter V-6 and all-wheel drive will be standard.

WEAPONS-GRADE: In addition to a slingshot, Acura designers say they were inspired by the motion of a bullet shot through water - the way the ripples affect all of the surfaces around it - when they drew the ZDX.

Happily, the Volvo entry is one of the handsomest of the bunch, comes standard with all-wheel drive and surprising off-road specs, and adds to the brand's reputation for safety with a new twist.

While factories tool up for the 2009 Ram 1500, Chrysler engineers are already toiling away on the next series of heavy-duty - or 2500 and 3500 - Ram models. We're told that for the first time, the larger trucks will sport a unique front fascia, but we're happy to hear that the large Rams will make use of the same interior as the 2009 Ram 1500.

Historically, Dodge received a lot of complaints about its truck interiors, and that's an issue Ralph Gilles, vice president of Jeep, truck, and advanced interior design, took to heart. The new interior is exponentially nicer than that of the outgoing Ram, and it is the first product of Chrysler's new interior design effort.

Expect to see the output from signature Cummins diesel engines remain about even with today's engine (350 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque), or even drop slightly in order to improve fuel economy. Scott Kunselman, vice president of truck product development, believes fuel economy is more important to truck buyers than the ability to pull the largest possible trailer up huge hills at 85 mph. Beefing up the transmission, chassis, and other related components to handle much more power would add weight and cost to the truck and only a handful of buyers would ever make use of it. Most of these heavy-duty trucks are used in fleets, and fleet managers are more interested in reducing fuel cost than seeing outrageous power levels.

Dodge will likely stick with the Ram HD's current absorber NOx catalyst system, for future 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty trucks instead of the urea treatment most diesel passenger cars use to meet EPA regulations. However, Dodge will use urea for its class 4 and 5 cab and chassis Rams because the emissions certification process is different for the larger trucks. Storing enough urea to last between oil changes is one problem for trucks with factory-installed beds, plus the urea can freeze and thus be rendered useless in northern climates. If the price of the catalyst system - which uses plenty of exotic materials - continues to rise, Dodge may have to re-evaluate this approach.

Though the Ram 1500's multi-link coil suspension makes a lot of sense for light-duty trucks, it doesn't in the heavy-duty segment. Virtually all three-quarter and one-ton trucks use a main leaf spring pack and a set of helper leaves to handle overload situations. There isn't any way to add helper springs to coil springs. Dodge's current strategy gears the 2500/3500 trucks for maximum towing and hauling, so the traditional leaf springs will remain on these models.
Dodge kicked off its current truck design last January when the 2009 Dodge {{{Ram 1500}}} was revealed at the North American International Auto Show. Now the wraps have come off the biggest Rams of them all: the 2010 Dodge {{{Ram 2500}}}, 3500, 4500, and 5500 pickups and chassis cabs.

Externally, the Dodge Ram 2500 and 2500 trucks look quite similar to the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup. Much of the sheetmetal and interior content is identical to the half-ton truck, although the heavy-duty trucks receive a unique grille, hood, and bumpers. Chassis-cab models look similar from the front bumper to the end of the cab, but there isn't a bed aft of the cab. Bare frame rails and accessible wiring harnesses allow third-party companies to install commercial bodies of all sorts.

Power comes from the familiar 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, which received improvements in the 2009 model year to boost power. In heavy-duty guise, it's rated for 383 hp and 404 lb-ft of torque. If diesel's more your style, opt for the 6.7-liter Cummins turbo-diesel I-6, which is rated at 350 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. Dodge equips about 90 percent of its heavy-duty trucks with the Cummins engine, and we'd imagine that statistic will hold: diesel 3500 pickups can tow as much as 18,500 pounds with a gooseneck or 5th wheel hitch.

We're most happy to see the revisions inside. With the 2009 Ram 1500, Dodge moved from a penalty box interior to one that was arguably class-leading, and the same can be said for the new 2500 and 3500. Luxuries like Sirius Backseat TV, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a navigation system, and a 10-speaker surround-sound audio package are now available in the heavy duty trucks. We've already sampled this interior during a drive of the 2009 half-ton truck and found it to be quite comfortable and very functional. One nifty feature for the heavy-duty trucks is an available integrated trailer brake controller: it's a first for Dodge, but competitors have already offered it in this segment.

Although a regular two-door cab is standard, truckers with large families will appreciate the choice of either a true crew cab or the enormous Mega Cab configurations. The shorter Quad Cab won't be offered on the 2500 or 3500 Rams. Those with tons of cargo may want to look at pairing the crew cab with the lengthy eight-foot bed, a combination that's new to Dodge's portfolio.

Those shopping for a capable and comfortable vehicle that's also capable of towing more than nine tons should certainly take a look at the new Ram. With a legendary Cummins diesel engine under the hood, it may prove tough to beat a 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 or 3500

Fans of diesel engines and German engineering will have another reason to rejoice in early 2010. The Audi A3 will be available with a 2.0-liter TDI engine for American drivers.

Few would argue the Audi A3 is a very competent little hatchback, or that the current 2.0-liter turbo-four and 3.2-liter V-6 are fantastic gas engines, but the availability of an equally fantastic diesel engine can only increase the appeal of this little Audi. Americans will only be able to get the A3 TDI with the S tronic (DSG) transmission and front-wheel drive. Audi says this is because the A3 TDI exists solely for fuel efficiency, perhaps something to consider as a luxurious alternative to the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight which are also appearing at the 2009 Detroit auto show.

The A3's 2.0-liter TDI engine is shared with the Volkswagen Jetta TDI, so it's no surprise the output is a familiar 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. EPA ratings for the Jetta are 29/40 mpg for front-wheel drive models with the DSG transmission and we expect similar figures for the A3. We also expect the Audi to be just as smooth and quiet as the Jetta TDI, if not a bit more refined.

Everything else in the little Audi should remain the same. A superb interior, hatchback capabilities, and lively driving dynamics won't be compromised by the diesel engine; you'll just go a little farther on each gallon of fuel. As a luxurious and sporty competitor to the increasing number of hybrids on the market, the 2010 Audi A3 TDI is clearly worth a look for eco-conscious people who also enjoy driving.

We never found Acura's TSX wanting for power, but in order to fill the gap between its entry-level model and the larger TL, the company's added a V-6-powered TSX model for 2010.

That V-6 is the same 3.5-liter, 24-valve, SOHC V-6 found in the front-wheel-drive TL. It's still rated at 280 hp and 254 lb-ft of torque, which represents a 79 hp and 84 lb-ft jump over the 2.4-liter I-4. Helping channel that power are new 20-inch wheels and larger disc brakes, which are exclusive to the TSX V-6.

Opting for the six-banger also yields buyers features like leather seating, a power sunroof, and a seven-speaker audio system as standard equipment. Acura's Technology Package, which includes navigation, real-time traffic updates, and a ten-speaker Panasonic/ELS surround sound system, remains an optional extra.

Certainly this sounds like an attractive option, but it comes with one caveat: there's no manual transmission. The TSX V-6 comes standard with Acura's five-speed automatic transaxle, and though it does offer a manual mode and requisite shift paddles, we'll miss the silky-smooth six-speed manual offered on four-cylinder cars.

Acura's surprisingly quiet on most details about this car, but promises we'll know learn more closer to the TSX V-6's launch this summer. Pricing hasn't been announced, but we'd estimate base prices hovering around $32,000 - right between the four-cylinder TSX and the front-wheel-drive TL.

Some people may be tempted to dismiss Audi's R8 mid-engined supercar as a reskinned Lamborghini Gallardo. The format is just so similar, and Audi already makes the Gallardo's body in one of its aluminum-space-frame facilities. Besides, with a history of intelligent platform sharing under its belt, why wouldn't Audi simply indulge in a little badge engineering?

The answer is simple: Audi is a company on a mission. Remember — this carmaker revolutionized rallying with its Quattro and then later turned the 24 Hours of Le Mans into a company picnic, with five victories scored by this new car's namesake. Audi also kick-started a design renaissance with the first TT and prompted an entire industry to look at vehicle interiors in a different light. What's left to do? Well, Audi would love to steal a larger share of the luxury-sedan market, and it would certainly like to stick it to Ferrari and Porsche in the segments those companies rule.
That's a tough objective, but if the R8 is anything to go by, don't dismiss the idea as pie in the sky. For one thing, the R8's versatile nature reminds us more of Ferrari's F430 than it does the more-or-less relentlessly severe Gallardo. This is not a car that gets in your face the whole time you're in it. When equipped with the stock suspension or the optional adjustable magnetic shocks, the R8 will cruise the freeway with as little ride disruption and mechanical commotion as an A4.
Yet at speed the R8 gathers itself into a tautly controlled crouch, heading where it's pointed with remarkable precision and exhibiting none of the propensity for snap rotation that some mid-engined cars have made famous. Some of its stability is from the unequal tire sizes, and some, no doubt, is from the Quattro all-wheel-drive system that has a default rear-wheel torque bias of 90 percent. The viscous-coupling center differential will never furnish more than 35 percent of available power to the front axle when it detects slip at the rear, preserving a strong rear-drive character in almost all circumstances.
This leaves the flat-bottomed steering wheel calm and nearly free of front-drive contamination. Sure, there's enough load increase in turns to inform the driver of events at the front wheels, but the leather rim is almost devoid of vibration and kickback shock. It's so good that we'll undoubtedly hear criticism aimed at the mechanism for being isolated and uninvolved. It really is not. The steering on this car is for the finely tuned driver rather than those who require feedback at 7.6 on the Richter scale.

But don't mistake this for a luxury coupe. The mid-mounted, direct-injected V-8 is borrowed from the heavy-breathing RS 4, but with dry-sump lubrication for its new low-slung duty. Mounted so that its throttle-body intakes face rearward, meeting ducts that loop around from big intake slots ahead of the R8's signature "side blades," the V-8 is actually offset from the center line to package the all-wheel drivetrain.
The transmission mounts behind the rear axle, and a shaft runs forward through the engine's sump to power the front axle. Audi needed space for that arrangement. But Audi has camouflaged the offset effect carefully with engine-bay hardware that makes the view through the glass hatch appear symmetrical. You need to check the position of the four-ring insignia on the car's tail to confirm that the engine is shaded to the right.

No one should doubt that the direct-injection V-8 is intended to be on display to passersby, and there is even LED lighting in the engine bay to enhance the effect at night. Ferrari makes a big deal of its F430 engine, too, particularly with the Spider version. Coincidence? Not likely, given that Audi's V-8 is as much aluminum sculpture as it is machine, and it is dressed accordingly, with considerable attention paid to its dual role as window model

Ariel Atom 2

The Ariel Atom 2 is by far the most committed track car here. In his quest for lightness and speed, the Atom's designer, Simon Saunders, left out the doors, the windshield, the top, and even a sheetmetal skin. It's like a two-seat formula car, and as the smallest and lightest in this group, it was the quickest by a wide margin—it catapulted to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds and was the fastest around the racetrack by almost two seconds.

The Atom's speed comes with a generous dollop of styling, as there are interesting details everywhere the eye falls. The signature element is the powder-coated steel-tube frame and its devilishly graceful curves that join the front and rear ends. It's the automotive version of Nike's swoosh.
"Everyone wants to touch it," remarked Tom Smurzynski. The car, that is. He's from Brammo Motorsports, the North American builder of the Atom. Although the car was created in England about seven years ago, most of the construction for North American Atoms is done at the Brammo shop in Ashland, Oregon. Those gorgeous steel tubes are precisely shaped in an automated CNC tube bender. Brammo also fabricates the suspension, the carbon-fiber fenders, and the fiberglass floor pan. There are enough changes over the original that Brammo has christened its car the "Atom 2." A base model starts at $41,995, and ours ran almost 60 grand.

Mounted in the rear are the supercharged four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission from a Chevy Cobalt SS. The engine is available in various horsepower levels, from 205 to 300. Ours had the 245-hp Stage 2 package.

Although we've never favorably compared the Cobalt engine's noise and vibration characteristics with a Honda engine's, the Chevy engine works fantastically in the Atom. The driver feels little vibration, which is likely thanks to the engine's balance shafts. The combination of supercharger whine and rorty exhaust is satisfyingly sporty.
There's so much low-end grunt that around Buttonwillow we rarely dipped below third gear. The Atom pulled fiercely at all rpm and could invoke massive wheelspin at will. Although the gearbox action is light, direct, and far slicker here than in a Cobalt, we were glad not to have to shift often. Things happen at warp speed in the Atom—straights evaporate, braking zones seemingly last only a few yards, and the corners feel as if you were in a centrifuge. We're used to far lazier responses than the Atom's, and we all had difficulty keeping up, which made some of us call the Ariel "nervous and twitchy."

We simply needed to acclimate. The Atom does what it's told, but you have to be damn quick and sure with your instructions. Once that was settled, we had joyous fun, passing the Z06 as if it were a minivan.

Outright speed is only one of the Atom's charms. Others—including watching the front suspension move, feeling the wind crawl up your pant legs and assault your noggin—could just as easily be called annoyances, depending on your frame of mind. This car, however, draws attention. The owner of our test car only uses it for track days and thus had not registered it for street use (we only drove it on the track), but we can easily imagine the stares it would elicit on public roads. In an ever more homogenized automotive landscape, there's nothing else like the Atom.

The new MX-5 Miata is still small – but it's bigger and more muscular than previous generations. Broader and longer than before, the MX-5 actually exudes a bit of menace from certain angles. The designers have done a good job of preserving the essential character of the Miata, while pumping it up at the same time.

The Grand Touring model comes with a cloth top, a classy upgrade from the vinyl tops found on the other MX-5 models. A glass rear window with a defroster will help make the MX-5 a year-round car, even in frigid climates.

Top up or top down, the MX-5 is a looker. Shiny integrated roll bars catch the light behind each seat, adding obvious safety benefits. The multi-spoke 17" alloy wheels look great, especially with the wide low-profile tires. Subtle badging never says "Miata" on the outside – I guess "MX-5" is more macho. Go figure.

I've always been a little jealous of Miata drivers. I don't have a tailored suit kind of body. I'm big and wide, always have been. Previous generation cars were just too small for me. The MX-5 has grown to accommodate me – just barely. If you're much over 6' tall, you may have to forget about driving, at least with the top up. The top closes with one big latch in the center of the windshield. It's easy to release with one hand, and flops open with minimal effort, literally in seconds. I was able to open and close the top from the driver's seat. I've owned several convertibles, and going topless is always a balance between convenience and pleasure. Not in the MX-5 – it's as easy as opening a window, and takes just as little thought.

The Grand Touring MX-5 features gorgeous leather seats, as opposed to the black cloth seats on other models. The seats are comfortable, supportive and generous. Leg room is sufficient for comfort, great for driving. The driver's foot box is a little tight – don't try to drive the manual MX-5 in your work boots.

The MX-5's dash is clean and uncluttered, a simple palette for performance driving. There's very little storage in the cabin, and the trunk holds just 5 cubic feet. Leave the junk in the SUV.
especially when the top is down and you can hear the rich exhaust note. It's the MX-5's four wheel independent suspension and handling that rocks. The MX-5's razor-sharp rack-and-pinion steering and low center of gravity make it feel glued to the road, never twitchy. My test car had a $500 suspension package with sport-tuning, Bilstein shocks and a limited slip differential – so it had particularly good road-feel and handling, swallowing bumpy roads whole.

All MX-5 models have the same engine, a 16-valve 4-cylinder powerplant that pumps out 170 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque. My test car's 6-speed manual transmission was well-matched to the engine, requiring a minimum of fussy shifting in traffic and providing great access to the meaty part of the powerband. The 4-wheel anti-lock brakes are great – big discs and calipers haul the MX-5 to a stop in a hurry.

Driving the MX-5 is a contact sport – you have to pay attention to the engine, brakes and steering to get the most out of the car. It is pleasantly tame in day-to-day driving, well-suited to big city commuting – as long as you're not intimidated by bigger vehicles. The MX-5 is itsy-bitsy.
Power isn't everything. Another important factor to consider with power is weight. It goes without saying that the lighter the car, the greater the effect engine power will have on it. The MX-5 is a very light car – 2498 lb – with a power/weight ratio of 0.068. Each horsepower from the engine has to move only 14.69 lb of car down the road. You have to spend lots more money to find that kind of power/weight ratio in a two-seater – there's not a two-seat roadster within $8,000 that can touch the MX-5's statistics.

Pontiac is releasing the Solstice in 2006, a missile aimed directly at the MX-5. Though it has similar pricing and proportions to the MX-5, the Solstice has a longer wheelbase, outweighs the MX-5 by 360 lbs and has a lower power/weight ratio (0.061). Saturn has the Sky on deck for 2007. Look for reviews here as soon as we can get our hands on them. It should be an exciting comparison.

Other two-seat roadsters on the market include the BMW Z4, Audi TT, Nissan 350Z Honda S2000 and Porsche Boxster – all of which cost $8,000 or more over the MX-5's price. That's how much you have to pay for this quality driving experience. The MX-5 is a real bargain. It's the most sports car you can get for the money, hands down.

Group Lotus plc unveils a new updated and significantly enhanced range of Europa’s at the 78th annual Geneva International Motor Show. The new entry level Europa is priced at £27,950 MSRP / €37,500, with the range topping Europa SE available for a competitive £32,995 MSRP / €41,500 (Euro prices are without taxes, delivery & other related costs).

These new Europa variants have been designed and developed especially for European customers and will be sold exclusively across Europe from June 2008. Powertrains and Series
A fine range of Duratec petrol and Duratorq diesel engines was chosen for the Focus Coupé-Cabriolet: While the 1.6-litre 100 PS/74 kW Duratec petrol is the entry level into the Focus ‘wind-in-the-hair’ experience, the well acclaimed 2.0-litre 145 PS/107 kW Duratec HE engine is available with a choice of a sporty 5-speed manual transmission or the very comfortable FN automatic transmission for relaxed cruising joy.

The 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi engine has 136 PS (100 kW) and a maximum torque of 320 Nm. To make driving with the 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi engine even more refined and comfortable, specific improvements have been made to its Sound quality and vibration behaviour. This engine – along with all other Ford Focus petrol and diesel engines – benefits from a new insulated, weight reduced cowl panel, for optimum acoustics and a new carpet with a modified heavy duty coating for further sound deadening.
In terms of the series availability, the new Focus Coupé-Cabriolet is once again available with a well equipped entry ‘Trend’ specification, which can also be ordered in conjunction with a special ‘Sport’ pack, covering a sport suspension and specially designed 17-inch alloy wheels. Black tinted headlamp housings on the exterior emphasise the sporty appearance of this series.

The top-of-the-range ‘Titanium’ series also features exterior details like specially designed 17-inch alloys and the black headlamp housings, but also classy interior items like the standard partial leather seats. As an option, full leather seats in three different designs are available.

High Safety Standards
A very stiff bodyshell construction and a precise suspension and steering tuning are the active and solid base for the new Focus Coupé-Cabriolet’s safety package. As a part of Ford PrecisionDrive, it helps drivers to intuitively rely on their Ford car in any driving situation. In addition to this very convincing package, ESP has now been introduced to be standard in all European major markets, and complements the very capable four-disc braking system with EBA.

The passive safety also starts with an ultra stiff bodyshell and a rigid passenger safety cell. Without a regular sedan roof structure however, front crash load paths for the Focus Coupé-Cabriolet had to be redistributed behind the A-pillars into the door structure.

As a result, these load paths were significantly reinforced by using high strength HSS 2 steel and increasing the rocker height by 35mm. The load path through the door structure can carry loads up to seven tons – comparable with the cumulated load capability of a Focus four-door at the roof and door structures.
In addition to standard front and side airbags, Ford’s new Rollover Protection Device (RPD) system plays a vital role in increasing Focus Coupé-Cabriolet’s passive safety performance. RPD is designed to help protect passengers in the unlikely event that the vehicle rolls over. Electronic sensors and a gyroscope are at the heart of the system, and can detect an impending rollover. When this happens, two ultra-strong safety roll bars “fire” into position within a tenth of a second. Combined with the reinforced A-pillars and the highly rigid front window frame, RPD is a reassuring device that provides valuable extra protection for occupants.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe SE

The 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe SE was shown to the world recently in New York and the stunning silver color with amazing window treatment looks simply unbelievable.

The 2010 Genesis will be a whopping 310HP and it will have the option of either a 4-cyl or V6. Whichever you choose won’t make a difference for the transmission as it comes with a six speed manual transmission on both models. The noise being talked around the release of this vehicle is the fact that it sends most of the power to the rear wheels making it super fast and great to control. It has custom Brembro brakes installed with each car. You can expect to see 19” rims on the car when you get it but that is easily customizable and will also make yours stand out amongst others.
There is no set figure for the cost of each Genesis but it has been said that it will be the cheapest 300HP coupe on the market when it hits in 2009. The engine will be able to power the Genesis from 0-60MPH in less than six seconds and the engine also uses lightweight techniques and products to make the engine more lightweight as well as thermal efficiency which helps keep the engine at a safe temperature.

There are some nice custom features included on the vehicle which include HID lights which are far better for night driving and seeing through bad weather, great stereo and audio system as well as great safety features. The vehicle shouldn’t cost much more then $30,000 - $40,000 when it’s released in 2010 and if there were any drawbacks I would say the interior could be improved quite a bit as it seems done cheaply. The 2010 Genesis is in production and the final prices and specs will be released as we near closer to the release of this wicked performance vehicle.

Scion Hako Coupe Concept

Scion took the wraps off of its latest concept Wednesday, 19th March at the 2008 New York Auto Show. Dubbed the Hako Coupe is intended to the video game playing younger generation. Scion’s Hako Coupe Concept is a very rare show car which in Scion’s own words is ‘polarizing’.

Scion vice president Jack Hollis explained that Hako Concept’s look is the sporty version of a box, but in fact looks more like an armored truck. The front of the car is highlighted with a load of LED headlights, a large upper grille and smaller lower grille. The hugely flared fenders are filled by eighteen inch wheels and 225 series tires with a special tread that spells out the name SCION, and a perfectly vertical windshield to complete the boxy look. The back features include LED taillights and backup lights meshed into the car’s exhaust. The Hako Coupe’s roof has a barcode pattern. That is eventually going to turn into rooftop wallpaper similar to pc wallpaper.

The inside is painted in orange and black with metallic accents. The four seats are covered with rubbery upholstery and the driver seat was designed with computer generated instruments and a gear that looks like a big joystick.

A Bluetooth connection allows music or video files to be uploaded to the Scion’s entertainment system which are comprised of the video monitors on the dash. There are more screens on each door and in the rear side walls displaying images from cameras that point outside. The passengers have the ability to edit these visuals in to you tube quality video.

Chevrolet 2010 Camaro

Chevrolet has unveiled the 2010 Camaro Transformers Special Edition. The BumbleBee package includes the iconic rally black stripes, the Autobot shield on both the interior and the exterior and the Transformers logo. The price is $995.

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Transformers Special Edition was unveiled at the Comic-Con in San Diego.

The package includes the black rally stripes, the Autobot shields - on driver and passenger side panels, on the wheels' center caps and embroidered on the interior center console. - and the Transformers logo, which is featured the doors sill plates and on to the hood rally stripes.

Given the success of the blockbuster movie, it was almost inevitable that GM should release this package.

As Karen Rafferty, product marketing director, Chevrolet, commented: "When the first Transformers movie was setting box office records, we had countless customers asking to purchase the 'Bumblebee' Camaro."

The “Bumblebee edition” Camaro package is available for $995.

Rolls-Royce has released technical details about the upcoming Ghost model which will be unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. It will be powered by a new 6.6 liter turbocharged V12 engine capable of 563 hp and coupled with a 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Rolls-Royce has confirmed the performance figures for the Ghost, the new model which will be unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

The car - previously known as Project RR4 - is based on the Rolls-Royce 200EX design study presented at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show.

The Ghost will be powered by a brand new 6.6 litre turbo charged V12 engine unique to Rolls-Royce.

This engine will produce 563 bhp, delivering a 0-60 mph time of 4.7 seconds and a governed top speed of 155 mph.
he engine is combined with an 8-speed automatic ZF gearbox.

Rolls-Royce Director of Engineering, Helmut Riedl said, “First and foremost Ghost is a Rolls-Royce. This means that despite its extraordinary performance figures it has been engineered for effortless composure and refined power delivery.

"This is illustrated by the significant levels of low down torque available which makes pulling away very smooth and for an exceptionally relaxed driving experience.”

Riedl continues, “[...] Ghost is about fingertip control while still enjoying a dynamic connection with the road.

"Equally passengers need to be cosseted from the physical sensations of acceleration, braking and cornering. Our chassis set up keeps Ghost stable and flat, preventing it from wallowing or pitching in the corners or imposing undesirable forces on those inside.”

Rolls-Royce has already confirmed that the Ghost will ride on an intelligent four corner air suspension system using multi link aluminium front and rear axles.

The engine, exhaust and even tyre noise have been engineered to be inaudible as far as possible, both internally and externally.

Customer deliveries of Ghost in Europe will begin late in 2009 with pricing from £165,000 excluding taxes and delivery charges.

Customer deliveries in other markets including the USA and Asia Pacific region will begin from the second quarter 2010.

A full technical specification will be released later in the year.

The MINI Cooper S with John Cooper Works (JCW) GP Kit is the fastest, most powerful production MINI ever. It can reach 100 km/h (62mph) in under 6.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 146mph.

The GP has a power output of 218hp, with a specific power of 136hp per litre, and a maximum torque of 245Nm.

In order to reduce the total mass, the MINI GP weighs approximately 40 kg less than a standard MINI Cooper S. This has been achieved by modifications to the chassis and engineering tweaks. The longitudinal control arms on the rear axle are now made of aluminium and the sound-deadening material has been taken out.
The entire rear seat bench has been removed. In its place is a very neat flat loading area that can be folded up in a Z-arrangement for easy access to two additional storage boxes.

Standard equipment includes: limited slip differential, Dynamic Stability Control, Recaro sports seats in Panther Black leather, single CD, air-conditioning and a multi-function steering wheel.

The car also features JCW sports brakes, JCW sports suspension and exclusive low-profile tyres and 18-inch light-alloy rims.

The special edition will only be available in exclusive metallic paintwork called Thunder Blue combined with a Pure Silver roof and Chili Red door mirrors.

A new aerodynamics package has been added that significantly improves the car’s drag coefficient and downforce on both front and rear axles, enhancing the driving experience at high speeds.

New highlights are the front and rear air dams, the extra low side-sills, and the underfloor cover, as well as a wing-shaped rear spoiler.

Malibu 2009 - Chevrolet mid size car with hybrid technology

The 2009 Chevrolet Malibu
is largely unchanged following its 2008 redesign. This is the smaller of Chevy's two midsize sedans. It shares its basic design with the Pontiac G6, Saturn Aura, and Saab 9-3. LS, LT, and LTZ trim levels remain unchanged. A gas/electric Hybrid model is also available. LS and LT have a standard 169-hp 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that teams with a 4-speed automatic transmission. A 6-speed automatic for the 4-cylinder is available on the LT and standard on the LTZ. LT and LTZ are available with a 252-hp 3.6-liter V6 that teams with the 6-speed automatic.

The Hybrid combines the 4-cylinder gas engine with an electric motor. The sole transmission is a 4-speed automatic. The hybrid system can turn off the gas engine while at a stop, but the car cannot accelerate solely on electric power. No plug-in charging is required. A big little-car company takes another stab at a midsize sedan, and this one’s all theirs. Kizashi--not its real name--promises a sporty persona and available all-wheel drive, but Camry, Accord, and Malibu probably have nothing to fear.
What We Know About the 2011 Suzuki Kizashi
Suzuki is a rising star on the world automotive stage. It’s the top-seller of the “K-Class” micro cars popular in its native Japan. It has a strong and growing presence in Europe. It commands a whopping 55 percent of the booming Indian car market. And its global business spans 192 markets and 2.4 million total sales in 2007. In the U.S., though, Suzuki is a niche player despite more than 25 years on the scene. Though it’s built a strong reputation with motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, boat engines, and other products, the brand still struggles to make serious sales inroads with cars and trucks.
That may be about to change. Suzuki’s new SX4 compact cars are off to a decent start, mainly because they’re decently stingy with a $4 gallon of gas. And unlike the underwhelming Esteem and Aerio of yore, the SX4 is appealing enough to earn Consumer Guide’s Best Buy ribbon for 2008.
Now Suzuki is revisiting the midsize sedan after flopping with the 2004-06 Verona, a disappointing shortcut designed and built by GM-Daewoo in South Korea. Suzuki sees the U.S. as its “next great frontier” market, believing it can--and should--make far more money here, hence this new stab at a mainstream car with potential yearly sales in the hundreds of thousands. Never mind that the 2011 Suzuki Kizashi will have the tough task of wooing buyers away from perennial class favorites Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. This big little-car company is determined to be as much a power in America as it is elsewhere. We’re frankly not sanguine about the prospects in light of past performance, but you gotta admire their pluck.
Already announced for a calendar-2010 debut, the 2011 Suzuki Kizashi will be a somewhat toned-down version of the Kizashi 3 concept unveiled at the March 2008 New York Auto Show. Kizashi is Japanese for “preview,” so a new title is expected for the showroom model. Unlike the Verona, this design is entirely Suzuki’s own, built on a new platform that may host other future vehicles.
If the concept is any guide, the 2011 Suzuki Kizashi will be 8-10 inches shorter than today’s Accord and Camry, but will ride a similarly long wheelbase and stretch 2-3 inches wider. The same comparisons hold for Chevrolet’s new and in-demand Malibu, another inevitable rival. Suzuki says Kizashi styling is meant to evoke “the physical superiority and dignity of a world-class athlete,” but we see mainly cribbed elements of Acura RL, Audi A6, Mazda 6, and several other cars. Kizashi is attractive, just not knockout original. Incidentally, one source predicts the concept’s roofline will be lifted a couple of inches and its 21-inch wheels replaced by more sensible shoes, probably 17s or 18s. Just so you know.
The 2011 Suzuki Kizashi will offer front-wheel drive and a choice of two powerteams. One comprises a new 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and a 5-speed automatic transmission. The other mates a 3.6-liter V6 with a 6-speed paddle-shift automatic and optional all-wheel drive. The 4-cylinder engine is said to be all-Suzuki, too. The V6, however, is based on the so-called “high feature” General Motors engine used in the Malibu and Suzuki’s own XL7 midsize SUV. It’s a vestige of the longtime GM-Suzuki alliance that was dissolved in March 2006 after delivering the Korean-built Verona and the soon-to-depart Suzuki Reno and Forenza compact cars.
Suzuki isn’t talking other Kizashi specifics just now, though it does boast of “strong, refined urban performance” and structural “weight- and space-saving technology that evolved from the lessons learned by Suzuki’s motorcycle and WRC [World Rally Championship] development teams.” With spin like this, you might think the Kizashi will offer the driving spirit of a Suzi bike with four wheels and all the comforts--which is doubtless what’s intended.
But let’s move on. Logically, the 2011 Suzuki Kizashi would include modern family car must-haves such as a four-wheel independent suspension, antilock brakes (with four-wheel discs likely standard at least for V6s), front and curtain side airbags, air conditioning, and power windows/locks/mirrors. But we’d also expect a no-cost navigation system, as announced for 2009-model SX4s. We haven’t heard about options yet, but the list will probably show rear-obstacle detection, radar-based cruise control, leather upholstery for 4-cylinder models, and the obligatory high-power sound system.
Summing up, the 2011 Suzuki Kizashi could be a worthy new choice among midsize family sedans. It might even be the new class “driver’s car” by dint of what the company terms a “‘super sport’ identity, a core component of the Suzuki brand DNA.” Then again, it could just as easily be another Suzuki car that over-promises and under-delivers both on the road and the sales chart. We’ll keep you posted.
With the arguable exception of optional all-wheel drive, we’ve heard nothing so far that suggests the 2011 Suzuki Kizashi will have any game-changing innovations. But we hope to be proven wrong. After all, this is a company with considerable engineering skill and experience, as most Suzuki motorcycle riders will attest, though you’d scarcely guess that from past Suzuki cars and trucks.
Buying Advice for the 2011 Suzuki Kizashi
Rocketing gas prices now have many buyers switching to 4-cylinder cars, so the base Kizashi will probably get most of the sales emphasis. Look for modest opening-day incentives if the national economy continues to sour. This is the largest, most ambitious car Suzuki has done since building its first four-wheeler back in 1955, and the company obviously expects great things from it. So do we, and so should you, especially given the stiff class competition and the also-ran nature of most previous Suzuki-built cars.
2011 Suzuki Kizashi Release Date: Suzuki promises to deliver a “Kizashi-influenced sport sedan to North American dealers by 2010.” Some sources take that to mean an early calendar-year sales start for a 2011 model.
